We are security experts, and we deal in facts and what actually happens in the real world, and what we see happening out there in the community every day. Most laptop thieves are not university educated computer experts. They are opportunistic petty criminals that see an opportunity to make a quick dollar. In virtually every case they will turn on your computer to see if there is anything of value on it ... they are curious. They will also almost always connect to the internet. If they don't, in most cases their next step is to sell the computer to someone that doesn't know it was stolen. After all, that is why they stole it in the first place - to make a quick buck. When the unsuspecting buyer then connects to the internet ... you have got them. It isn't too hard for the police to then track down the original thief. And even if they can't, you will still get your laptop back.
